Alleyway Arts Festival 2012, Geelong
When offered to share a space to use to contribute to the Alleyway Arts Festival with the events’ Green Room, it was obvious that we would bring the hidden parts of the festival to light. Working with a group of circus performers, the windows of the space became the backstage area for a false stage within the building. Audience members on the street would see the performers readying themselves – stretching, primping, applying makeup – to then behind curtains and hear the thumping music and see occasional stage lights, shadows or silouttes of the performance taking place inside, then reappear sweaty and exhausted. We then took the circus to the street and coined our catch phrase “We’re just making this up”.
